~ GIALLO Films - Halloween 2025 ~
Black-gloved killers, blood-red violence: welcome to the mind-warping world of giallo, the luridly stylized genre of mystery-thrillers that emanated from Italy in the 1960s and ’70s. Sprung from the imaginations of directors like Mario Bava & Dario Argento, giallo took classic influences - murder, mystery & occasionally the supernatural - and scrambled them into baroque exercises in pure stylistic excess, defined by kaleidoscopic color, voyeuristic camera work, eye-popping mise-en-scène, and eardrum-shattering soundtracks.
Unbound from narrative logic and laced with subversive critiques of church, state, and class, these perversely pleasurable cinematic transgressions are some of the most inspired and imaginative genre films ever made. (from the Sept 2024 Criterion Channel's Giallo feature write-up)
The name 'giallo' comes from the Italian word for yellow, as this film genre was inspired by inexpensive pulp-thriller paperbacks, which often had bold, bright-yellow covers.

The Red Queen Kills Seven Times

~ The Three Mothers (inspired by the films of Dario Argento) - Halloween 2025 ~
As there are three Graces, three Furies, three Fates, three Muses ... there are three Sorrows also. Mater Suspiriorum, Mater Tenebrarum, and Mater Lachrymarum. Not only mothers, but sisters in kind. Witches of ill-intent, mothers who cannot create life, so they choose to subvert and twist it instead.
Introduced first was Suspiriorum, Mother of Sighs, in the film Suspiria (1977), an undisputed horror classic. Argento followed up in 1980 with Inferno, a visually stunning film that delves deeper into the lore of the Three Mothers, and focused mainly on Tenebrarum, Mother of Darkness. Not quite up to par with the first film on plot (or acting...), it also sadly suffered from a limited theatrical release, failing to remake its budget. The planned third film was then shelved until Argento finally finished the trilogy in 2007, after a decades-long delay with: The Mother of Tears, a visually bland and poorly-executed outing, not up to par with Argento's early-career output, but wrapping up the story of Lachrymarum. The lore remains inspiring and multiple filmmakers inspired by Argento's work, have gone on to create additional stories about this compelling trio of characters.
While some might include Argento's work under the umbrella of giallo, many film scholars do not. There are shared visual cues, but the plots veer more into the realm of supernatural thriller and horror than strictly the giallo genre.
